Gazing across the shimmering waters, have you ever noticed the narrow passage separating Waiheke Island from its smaller neighbour, Motuihe? This, my friends, is Sergeant Channel. During World War II, this seemingly tranquil strait played a vital role in Auckland’s coastal defense network. Motuihe Island became a strategic point against potential Japanese invasion. The 61st Battery of the 9th Heavy (coast) regiment set up two 4 inch Mk iX guns on Motuihe. One gun positioned behind the headland overlooked the graves. The other commanded Ocean Beach. These positions provided comprehensive coverage. They protected the channel between Waiheke and Motutapu. They also guarded Home Bay and the southeastern coast of Motutapu, preventing enemy landings. Importantly, the Ocean Beach gun also covered Sergeant Channel itself, securing the passage between Waiheke and Motuihe. A telephone line connected Motuihe to the Fire Command Post on Rangitoto Island. This ensured swift communication in case of an attack. While the headland gun was removed in 1943, the Ocean Beach gun remained for several years. The Navy continued to use it for training purposes, a silent testament to the strategic importance Sergeant Channel held during those uncertain times.
