Did you know, tucked away in Upper Serangoon View, lies a school steeped in history? Serangoon Secondary School, or SSS as it’s affectionately known, has been shaping young minds for almost a century. It’s not just a school. It’s a living testament to Singapore’s evolving educational landscape. Serangoon Secondary School first opened its doors in 1928 as Serangoon English School. It began its journey on Simon Road in a modest two-story building. Back then, with just seven classes, a headmistress, and seven teachers, it held a unique position as the only government co-educational school in the then Colony of Singapore. It also served as a feeder school to the prestigious Raffles Institution. Imagine those early days, a small school with big dreams. Fast forward to 1937, Serangoon Secondary School expanded to offer education up to what is now considered Secondary Three. High-achieving students would then continue their studies at Raffles Institution or Raffles Girls’ School. The school continued to grow, establishing its first School Certificate class in 1949. This marked a significant milestone, transforming it into a full-fledged institution offering education from Primary One to the Cambridge School Certificate level. In 1958, it officially transitioned into a secondary school. Seven years later, it further broadened its horizons by introducing Pre-University classes. This expansion reflects the school’s commitment to providing comprehensive education. A significant chapter in Serangoon Secondary School’s story unfolded in 1967. The school relocated to Lowland Road and adopted its current name. The Pre-University section closed in 1976 with the establishment of Junior Colleges. Then, in 2001, Serangoon Secondary School settled into its current home at 11 Upper Serangoon View. Today, Serangoon Secondary School stands as a vibrant hub of learning. It boasts a diverse range of CCAs and a particularly strong reputation for its uniformed groups. These groups consistently achieve the gold award for Best Unit, highlighting the school’s dedication to holistic development. Even the school’s crest is rich with symbolism. Blue represents piety and sincerity. White embodies purity in thought, word, and deed. Orange symbolizes strength, integrity, and endurance. The eagle signifies self-discipline, dignity, esteem, and power. Finally, the lamp represents knowledge, illuminating the path for generations of learners. Serangoon Secondary School has been much more than bricks and mortar. It has been a crucible where countless students have discovered their passions, honed their skills, and forged lifelong friendships.
