“Animal paradise” they called it. Serangoon North Village earned this nickname because of its many pet shops. Today we will explore Serangoon North in Singapore. It is more than just a residential area. Serangoon North is a vibrant blend of community, commerce and evolving history.

Serangoon North is a subzone of Serangoon. It is located north of Serangoon Central. Serangoon Gardens is to the southwest. Ang Mo Kio sits to the west. Hougang is to the east. Yio Chu Kang Road connects these areas.

The area is divided into two main sections. Serangoon North Village comprises Avenues 1 and 2. Serangoon North Estate includes Avenues 3, 4, 5 and 6. The estate was built between 1992 and 1994. The village predates the 1990s.

Serangoon North Village is managed by the Workers’ Party. It falls under the Aljunied GRC. Serangoon North Estate is under the People’s Action Party. It is part of the Ang Mo Kio GRC, specifically the Jalan Kayu ward.

Serangoon North is known for its animal-related businesses. You can find shops selling birds, fishes and other animals. Veterinary clinics are also located here.

Serangoon North Estate has factories and industrial buildings. Keppel NTT and Popular Holdings are notable companies here. Popular Holdings relocated from Toh Tuck. Data centers like Iron Mountain have also been built. First Centre offers car services. Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park II is part of this industrial area. You can find a 24-hour coffee shop near Avenues 4 and 5. It is called KPT.

Traffic was once a major issue near Rosyth School. Parents would stop along Serangoon North Avenue 4. They waited for their children after school. This caused severe congestion. In late 2011, the school improved the traffic flow. They built a pick-up and drop-off area. It was modeled after Resorts World Sentosa’s carpark. Now, Serangoon North Avenue 4 has smoother traffic.

Keep an eye out for the new Serangoon North MRT station. It is scheduled to open by 2030. This will further improve connectivity.

Serangoon North continues to evolve. It balances residential comfort with industrial activity. The blend of old and new makes Serangoon North a unique place in Singapore.
