Beneath your feet lies more than just sand and pathways at Sentosa Park. This island boasts a history far richer than its modern attractions might suggest. Sentosa’s story starts long before the thrilling rides and beautiful beaches.

Sentosa, now known as the “isle of tranquility”, wasn’t always called that. Imagine, if you will, stepping back to a time when this island was known as Pulau Blakang Mati. This translates to “the island behind which lies death”. Quite a contrast, isn’t it? This ominous name may have come from pirate battles that once raged around these shores.

Fast forward to the colonial era. The island served as a military base. Forts Serapong, Connaught, and Siloso were built in the 1870s and 1880s to guard the harbor’s entrances. These forts played a role in the defense of Singapore. Contrary to popular belief, the military installations on Blakang Mati were not completely useless in the Battle of Singapore for they were used to fire on targets in the centre, west and north of Singapore.

But Sentosa’s story isn’t just about battles and soldiers. The island also housed villages. British doctor Robert Little documented three villages inhabited by Malays, Bugis and Chinese in 1848. These villages were Kampong Ayer Bandera, Kampong Serapong and Kampong Blakan Mati. Pineapples thrived here. Blakang Mati was a vast pinery supplying Singapore with this delightful fruit.

After the war, life on Blakang Mati began to change. Mainland visitors came to fish and camp. The island’s potential was clear. In 1967, the newly independent government of Singapore considered its future. Some wanted a petrochemical complex. Others envisioned an oil-related industrial hub.

Thankfully, saner minds prevailed. Economic advisor Albert Winsemius and Alan Choe convinced Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew to turn the island into a resort. The potential air pollution from an oil refinery so close to the city centre might have pushed the authorities to choose to retain Blakang Mati as a holiday island cum green lung.

In 1972, the island was renamed Sentosa. This means “isle of tranquility” in Malay. A stark contrast to its former name. The Sentosa Development Corporation was established to oversee its transformation.

In 1974, a cable car system connected Sentosa to mainland Singapore. It quickly became popular. Attractions such as the Sentosa Golf Club and Fort Siloso soon followed. In its early years, visitors could only access Sentosa by ferry or cable car. This changed when a monorail was completed in 1982.

Sentosa has continued to evolve over the years. New attractions and resorts have been added. Today, Sentosa is a vibrant destination. It offers something for everyone.

As you enjoy your time here at Sentosa Park, remember the island’s fascinating past. From pirate battles to military base to tranquil resort. Sentosa has truly transformed itself. It is a testament to Singapore’s ability to reinvent and reimagine.
