“Sentier du Plateau: Access it from Thorens-Glières. RD55 leads toward the Plateau des Glières. Passing the Maison du Plateau, a parking area lies 150m ahead near Col des Glières.” That’s how every guide starts but I’ll do it differently. I’ll show you what it means to be here.
Today we explore the Sentier du Plateau. It is more than just a path. This trail offers a journey through history and nature.
The trail begins at the Col des Glières parking area. From there, you will walk along an alpine route, crossing the Plateau. This main path passes by a farm. You will encounter several intersections. Keep heading toward La Mandrolière.
During your traverse of the Sentier du Plateau, you can choose different routes. Consider the botanical path for local plant life. Or the historic trail for stories of the past.
Arriving at La Mandrolière, continue on the alpine road. Follow signs toward Chez Lotus, about 1.5 hours away. At the intersection, turn left. This brings you to Les Frêchets.
At the next intersection, take the descending path toward Chez Lotus. It is marked as one hour away. As you descend, enjoy the panoramic views of the Aravis mountains. Follow the marked path to the paved road. This road ascends to the Plateau des Glières via Petit-Bornand at La Combe intersection.
Reaching the intersection, stay on course for Chez Lotus. A few meters ahead on the road, find a path at the intersection called Ancien chemin. Continue toward Chez Lotus.
The route leads to RD 12, connecting Bonneville to the Massif des Aravis. In the heart of Plateau des Glières, you will find Gilioli’s monument. It honors the resistance fighters. André Malraux inaugurated it in 1973. The Maison du Plateau welcomes visitors with information and a picnic area.
The Sentier du Plateau also pays homage to Lieutenant Tom Morel. He led the Maquis de Haute-Savoie during the German occupation. Morel’s courageous acts during 1942-1944 resonate in the Resistance history.
Starting from Petit Bornand, this long hike leads to Plateau des Glières. It passes between Montagne des Auges and Montagne des Frêtes foothills.
The forest path gradually ascends to Frêchet. From there, discover beautiful views of the Val de Borne. You are then at the gateway to Plateau des Glières. Enjoy the pastures stretching before you. These are the alpine meadows of Pâquis, Chez Constance, and Perrière.
This area has a rich pastoral tradition. You can immerse yourself in it during your walk. You can also taste local specialties at Refuge-Restaurant Chez Constance.
The route extends to Col de Glières. Consider continuing to the National Resistance Monument. André Malraux’s speech inaugurated it in 1972. It is now a listed historical monument.
Remember to pack essentials. Cereal bars, sufficient water, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a small first-aid kit are vital. Wear appropriate clothing for the season and weather. If herds are present, dogs must be leashed. Access is free.
From “Pierre aux Clercs” follow signs for “Plateau des Glières”. Pass through “Chez Lotu”, “Creux Golliet”, “Frêchet” and “La Mandrolière”. At “La Mandrolière”, head towards “Col des Glières (Parking)”. Pass “Le Plan”, “Le Plan (Ouest)”, “Les Pins à Crochet” and “Le Petit Bois”. Arriving at “Col de Glières (Parking)”, return by the same route. The Maison du Plateau and National Resistance Monument are five minutes away.
The Sentier du Plateau combines history, nature, and remembrance. Walk thoughtfully. Absorb the panoramic views and stories. The trail provides a unique and enriching experience. It connects us to the past. It inspires us to appreciate the present. It’s a place where every step tells a story.
