Slipping through time, imagine yourself back in 15th-century Paris. A peculiar hill rises near the Saint-Denis gate, not of earth or rock, but of accumulated refuse. This unusual landmark gives birth to a hamlet, Villeneuve sur Gravois, “the New City on Gravel”. Paths, or “sentiers” in French, wind around this refuse hill, leading to what we now know as the Sentier du Bois de Richebourg in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine. This is one theory for the origin of the name, “Sentier”. Another suggests the name derives from a walkway around the old city walls. Fast forward to 1591, during the rebellion against King Henri IV. This trash heap becomes a strategic concern, feared as a potential artillery position for the king. The hill is promptly leveled. The area transforms. Centuries pass, and the Sentier du Bois de Richebourg becomes associated with another fascinating chapter of Parisian history, the Court of Miracles. In the 17th century, this area housed a hidden society of beggars and thieves. This “counter-society” operated with its own hierarchy, laws, and even taxes, directly challenging the authority of the crown. The beggars employed elaborate ruses, feigning illnesses and disabilities to evoke sympathy and alms from unsuspecting Parisians. Upon returning to their sanctuary, these ailments miraculously vanished, hence the name “Court of Miracles”. This charade couldn’t last. Louis XIV, the Sun King, tasked his police lieutenant, La Reynie, with eradicating this den of iniquity. In 1667, La Reynie besieged the Court of Miracles, issuing a chilling ultimatum: the last twelve beggars captured would face the gallows. Panic ensued, the inhabitants scattered, and the Court of Miracles met its end. The grateful citizens of Paris dubbed this event “bonne nouvelle,” or “good news.” The echo of this historical event resonates today in the name of a nearby metro station. In more recent times, the Sentier district, close to our path, evolved into a hub for the garment industry. The Sentier du Bois de Richebourg, tucked away in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, offers a glimpse into the layers of history embedded within the fabric of Paris. From refuse heaps to hidden societies to the bustling garment trade, the echoes of the past whisper along the Sentier, inviting us to explore the rich tapestry of stories hidden within seemingly ordinary places.
