Winding through Montfermeil, have you heard about the Sentier des Combarts? It’s more than just a path. The Sentier des Combarts offers a slice of local life.

While my research doesn’t reveal specific tales linked directly to the Sentier des Combarts itself, I can share the rich history of a similar area in Paris. It might give us a sense of the stories that could be woven into any old path. Let’s imagine the Sentier des Combarts holds similar echoes.

Think of the Sentier district in Paris. Once upon a time, this Parisian area was just a rubbish dump. A hill made of waste grew near the city walls during the Hundred Years War. People tossed garbage in the same spot creating a 10-meter high mound. They even built a windmill on top. Trails, “sentiers” in French, led to this unusual landmark. Some say this is where the district got its name.

Later, the area transformed. The Sentier became a haven for craftsmen in the 17th century. By the 20th century, it was the heart of the ready-to-wear clothing industry. This attracted waves of immigrants. Jews, Turks, Armenians and Asians came. The 1997 film “La Vérité si je mens” humorously depicted the life of North African Jews there.

The Sentier district even had a counter-society. It was called the Court of Miracles. Thirty thousand beggars and thieves lived in a fortified slum. They had their own king, laws and slang. They defied authorities by refusing to pay taxes. Beggars pretended to be sick or invalid to gain sympathy. When they returned to their lair, their ailments vanished. King Louis XIV couldn’t tolerate this defiance. He sent the police to destroy it.

Today, the Sentier has transformed again. It is now dubbed “Silicon Sentier”. Data centers and tech start-ups have moved in. Yet, it still carries echoes of its diverse past.

Now, imagine walking the Sentier des Combarts. Perhaps local stories whisper on the wind, just like in Paris’s Sentier. Think about the people who walked this path. What were their lives like? What dreams did they carry? Even a simple path can hold layers of history.
