Beneath the Parisian sky, the Sentier de l’Aqueduc whispers tales of ingenuity and royal ambition. The Sentier de l’Aqueduc isn’t just a path. It’s a journey through time, following the lifeblood of Paris. This 8-kilometer stretch winds from the Jardin du Luxembourg to the slopes of Arcueil. It traces the routes of not one, not two, but three aqueducts. These aqueducts represent different eras of Parisian history: the ancient, the royal, and the imperial.

Marie de Médicis, the Italian-born queen of France, yearned for fountains and basins in her Luxembourg Palace gardens. Paris, however, was parched. The Seine was unreliable, and wells were often contaminated. So, Marie diverted the Rungis, a small river south of Paris. She commissioned a 10-kilometer aqueduct to bring its water to the city’s edge, through what is now the 14th arrondissement. This very Sentier de l’Aqueduc follows its path. During construction, workers stumbled upon the remnants of Lutèce’s ancient aqueduct. This Roman marvel once supplied the Cluny Baths. The ruins were preserved, a testament to the city’s layered history. You can glimpse them along the Sentier de l’Aqueduc. While Marie’s aqueduct still functions, it’s Belgrand’s 19th-century aqueduct, built under Haussmann and Napoleon III, that quenches modern Paris’s thirst.

The Sentier de l’Aqueduc culminates in Arcueil, where the three aqueducts emerge, creating a striking landscape. Here, Napoleon III’s aqueduct rests upon Marie de Médicis’s, a physical representation of the city’s evolving infrastructure. You can even spot a “regard,” an access point for maintenance, on Marie’s aqueduct. The Sentier de l’Aqueduc is more than just a walk. It’s an encounter with the ambition of kings and queens, the ingenuity of engineers, and the thirst of a city. As you stroll along the Sentier de l’Aqueduc, remember the stories it whispers. Imagine the workers who built these structures, the water flowing through the channels, and the gardens they nourished. The Sentier de l’Aqueduc connects you to the very pulse of Paris, a pulse that has beat for centuries.
