Commissioned in 1597 by Safiye Sultan mother of Sultan Mehmed III Yeni Cami’s construction began with ambition. Safiye envisioned a mosque to rival the city’s greatest structures. It was to be a powerful symbol of Islamic influence a subtle counterpoint to the city’s thriving Jewish community. But the project was beset by troubles.
The initial architect died. Political shifts caused delays. The immense cost drew criticism from the powerful Janissaries. Ultimately work stalled after Mehmed III’s death in 1603. Safiye’s influence waned her grand vision left unfinished. Decades passed. The partially built mosque fell into disrepair. Then came the Great Fire of 1660. It ravaged Istanbul leaving Yeni Cami severely damaged.
Yet from ashes a new hope emerged. Turhan Sultan mother of Sultan Mehmed IV took up the mantle. She not only completed the mosque but also oversaw the construction of the nearby Spice Bazaar a bustling hub that complemented Yeni Cami’s grandeur. Completed in 1663 and inaugurated in 1665 the mosque was renamed Yeni Valide Sultan Camii the New Valide Sultan Mosque. Over time it simply became known as Yeni Cami the New Mosque.
The mosque’s architecture is breathtaking. Sixty-six domes and semi-domes cascade down from a central dome rising 36 meters high. Two minarets pierce the sky.
