Imagine a seed. This seed contained a vision that sprouted into Sengkang Methodist Church.
Sengkang Methodist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. It began with a shared vision among three Methodist churches. These churches wanted to establish ministries in the developing Sengkang estate.
In the late 1990s, Gloria Methodist Church played a crucial role. It transferred all its active members to the new church. Members from Hakka Methodist Church and Paya Lebar Chinese Methodist Church joined them. On September 10 2000, Sengkang Methodist Church became a local conference. It was part of the Chinese Annual Conference.
For two years, the congregation worshipped in an unusual location. They gathered in the Emmanuel Hall at Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School. This hall was once an air-rifle range in the school’s basement. During this time, the church became known as “the underground church”. The church office was located in a bomb shelter nearby in Hougang.
Even while underground, Sengkang Methodist Church was active. They started outreach programs in Sengkang before their building was complete. From 2000 to 2002, they organized over 20 community events. These included Christmas celebrations and mooncake festivals. These events reached out to the residents of Sengkang. They also began befriending work in local schools. The Sengkang Methodist Children Centre was established. Oikos.Community@Sengkang, the church’s outreach arm, was also founded.
In 2002, 150 members moved into the completed church building. By 2017, the church had grown to over 900 members. Sengkang Methodist Church now offers various ministries. These ministries cater to different age groups. There is Compass Ministry for children. D’Anchor Ministry serves the youth. The church also has a Young Adult Ministry. Adult Ministry exists for the older members. Evergreen Ministry supports the seniors.
Sengkang Methodist Church stands at 31 Anchorvale Road. It is a place where faith, hope, and love thrive. The church welcomes everyone to experience God’s love. It offers English and Mandarin services. The English service is held at 8:45 AM on Sundays. The Mandarin service takes place at 11 AM. Compass Kids also meets at these times. D’Anchor Youth meets on Fridays at 7:30 PM.
The Sengkang Methodist Church embodies community. It connects people and nurtures spiritual growth. It is more than just a building. It is a beacon of hope in Sengkang.
