Originally a humble fishing village Sengkang has blossomed into a thriving new town. Its name meaning “prosperous harbor” in Chinese reflects its transformation. Imagine a time when rubber pepper and pineapple plantations dotted the landscape. That’s the Sengkang of the mid-20th century. The nearby Punggol Rural Centre housed a few low-rise residential blocks for farmers.

The Housing and Development Board HDB had a vision. They planned to build a modern housing estate. In 1994 a team of ten began designing Sengkang. They divided it into seven subzones planning for 95000 housing units. Local newspapers dubbed it “Town of the Seafarer” a nod to its fishing village past.

Four main neighbourhoods emerged Rivervale Compassvale Anchorvale and Fernvale. Each with its own theme and colour scheme. The distinctive three-storey pilotis a common feature in Sengkang’s architecture. It’s a charming reminder of the stilt houses found in fishing villages and the trunks of the old plantations. Rivervale saw the completion of the first apartment blocks in 1997. By 2001 over 33700 dwelling units existed. As of 2017 there were 65981 HDB units in Sengkang.

The growth of Sengkang presented challenges. Residents needed amenities. A steering committee formed in 1999 to address this. They ensured void-deck shops a new mall and childcare centers opened. Sengkang’s success was in its integrated planning. Public transport infrastructure was developed alongside the housing. The Sengkang MRT LRT station and Bus Interchange are a testament to this approach.

Sengkang boasts a rich tapestry of residential and commercial spaces. There’s Compass Heights a private condominium integrated with public transport. Compass One formerly Compass Point is Singapore’s first thematic suburban shopping center. It even includes a public library.

The Sengkang General and Community Hospital stands tall. It caters to residents’ medical needs. Sengkang also houses the SingHealth Sengkang Polyclinic and numerous schools. It is well-connected through major roads and the North East MRT Line. The Sengkang LRT line further connects residents.

The town’s transformation is remarkable. Its history is woven into its fabric. From a modest fishing village Sengkang has become a vibrant modern town. A testament to urban planning and community growth. A place where the past meets the present. And the future looks bright.
