How about a hidden gem accessible only through a short trek? That’s Seng Chew Quarry. Today, we explore this abandoned granite quarry near Bukit Gombak MRT. It is a place unmarked on most maps. Seng Chew Quarry offers a unique experience away from the usual tourist trails.

Back in the 1970s and early 1980s, granite was vital for Singapore’s construction. Much of the public housing and roads were built using granite. This granite came from quarries around the island. The strongest rock formation was found at Gombak Norite. Tests showed it to be ten times stronger than concrete. Seng Chew Quarry was part of Gombak Norite.

Compared to Singapore Quarry, Dairy Farm Quarry and Hindhede Quarry, Seng Chew Quarry is different. These other quarries are accessible and part of NParks’ nature trails. Seng Chew Quarry is not. This isolation adds to its adventurous appeal.

To get to Seng Chew Quarry, you can park near Block 383 Bt Batok West Ave 5. From there, walk behind the flats toward the open green slope. The trek is short, only about 50 meters. Soon, you will see a fence. Behind it lies a tranquil body of water.

Stepping into Seng Chew Quarry feels surreal. Away from civilization, the sounds of birds and insects surround you. The quarry lake is a peaceful escape.

The trail to Seng Chew Quarry is simple and short. It includes ascending a slope and walking by a drain. There is also a brief trek through the forest. Remember to wear shoes with good grip. Be careful not to fall into the drain. Bring your sense of adventure.

After its abandonment, rainwater filled Seng Chew Quarry. The former quarry transformed into a lake. Some believe the water has magical properties. Some even believe it brings good luck. There are stories of 4D winners deriving numbers after washing their cars with the water.

To reach Seng Chew Quarry, trace the large drain up the grass slope behind Block 383. If the slope seems too challenging, you can ascend from the right. The slope there is gentler. Then, make your way back to the drain at the top.

For a bird’s-eye view, look for an opening into the forest on the left of the drain. Follow the man-made trail into the forest. You will reach a vegetable garden with banana trees and chili plants. Slightly ahead, you will be rewarded with an aerial view of the quarry lake.

As you walk, you might pass a fallen tree. Remember, there are monkeys around. Be careful if you have food. About 50 meters into the forest, you will reach a green fence. Beyond the fence is the quarry. You can get closer to the water through an opening to the left of the fence.

Seng Chew Quarry was one of nine quarries operating at Gombak Norite. Its transformation from a quarry to a serene lake is remarkable.

Seng Chew Quarry offers a unique blend of history and nature. It is a testament to Singapore’s industrial past and natural beauty. As you leave, remember the stories this hidden gem holds. It is a reminder of the unexpected adventures that await.
