How do two towering concrete horns commemorate a pivotal moment in Olympic history? Before you stands Señales a monumental sculpture by Angela Gurría. It’s a powerful symbol created for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Señales wasn’t just any artwork. It marked the first station of the Ruta de la Amistad the Friendship Route. This ambitious project featured 19 sculptures by international artists celebrating the games. Señales however held a special meaning.

Angela Gurría’s Señales is a striking 18-meter-high structure. It consists of two distinct forms one white one black. They stand side by side representing equality. This seemingly simple design carries profound significance. It commemorates South Africa’s exclusion from the 1968 Olympics due to its Apartheid policies. The sculpture’s stark contrast embodies the struggle against racial injustice. Señales boldly highlights a critical moment of international athletic and social conscience.

Initially located at the Glorieta de San Jerónimo Señales faced neglect after the Olympics. Fortunately in 2006 it was restored by the Moisés Cosío Family. However the area became congested. In 2011 Señales relocated to its current position at the intersection of Anillo Periférico and Avenida Insurgentes Sur near Ciudad Universitaria. This move protected the artwork from potential damage during road construction.

Señales is more than just a sculpture. It’s a powerful statement. It’s a tribute to human rights and social justice. It’s a reminder that even in the realm of sport the fight for equality continues. This remarkable piece of modern art serves as a lasting legacy of the 1968 Olympics and the artist’s unwavering commitment to social commentary. It is also a testament to Mexico’s rich artistic heritage. As you gaze at Señales consider the stories it embodies the history it represents.
