Later, the old Rio-São Paulo road crossed here. A viaduct took it over the railway line of the Ramal de Mangaratiba. This line is now known as Ramal de Santa Cruz. In 1914, the Augusto Vasconcelos Station was built here. It honored Senator Augusto de Vasconcelos who died in 1915. The neighborhood then took his name.
There’s an interesting tidbit. Near the São Pedro Church on Avenida de Santa Cruz, there’s a lodge. Emperor Dom Pedro I often stayed there. He would meet his lover during trips to the Royal Santa Cruz Farm.
Senador Vasconcelos was officially established on July 23, 1981. Decree No. 3158 marked its beginning. Adjustments were made later by Decree No. 5280 on August 23, 1985.
In 2000, Senador Vasconcelos had an HDI of 0.802. This ranked it 90th in Rio de Janeiro. The neighborhood shares borders with Campo Grande, Santíssimo and Senador Camará.
Today, Senador Vasconcelos has a train station on the Ramal de Santa Cruz. It also boasts one of the best human development indexes in the region. Its main roads are Estrada do Pré and Rua Artur Rios. These connect it to Campo Grande. Avenida Santa Cruz links the neighborhood to Realengo.
In 2010, the neighborhood had a population of 30600. There were 9826 homes. Covering 644.18 hectares, Senador Vasconcelos is part of the Campo Grande administrative region.
