Sembawang Park is more than just a pretty park. It’s a 15-hectare expanse in northern Singapore. It overlooks the Straits of Johor offering stunning views of Malaysia. The park’s name comes from the Sembawang tree a species found in the area. You can see one near car park C1.
Sembawang Park’s history is deeply rooted in Singapore’s past. The park’s pathways are old roads now paved with asphalt. They bear witness to the area’s transformation. To the west lies the Sembawang Shipyard. This was once His Majesty’s Naval Base a crucial British Royal Navy base. Construction began in 1923 and concluded in 1938. It was the largest dockyard outside Britain itself. The battleships HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse were tragically sunk here in 1941. A memorial commemorates their crews. The Japanese occupied the base from 1942 to 1945. They used it for repairs. The base was later converted into the Sembawang Shipyard in 1968.
The Sembawang Jetty a 30-meter structure was built by the British then abandoned during the Japanese occupation. The Japanese finished its construction. Now it’s a popular fishing spot. The remains of the Seletar Pier are nearby. Bombed in 1942 it served as a transport point during the naval base’s construction.
The Beaulieu House dating back to the 1910s stands as a testament to the past. Initially a seaside home it housed senior engineers and officers during the naval base’s existence. Admiral Layton the top naval officer in Singapore lived there from 1940 to 1942. It’s now a conserved restaurant.
Sembawang Park also boasts one of Singapore’s few remaining natural sandy beaches. The park’s renovated in 2011. It now features a maritime-themed playground shaped like a battleship. Over 40 bird species have been recorded here by the Nature Society of Singapore. The cannonball tree another attraction has large woody fruits resembling cannonballs.
