Built in 1956 Selwyn College stands proudly. It was a response to Auckland’s post-war growth. New suburbs like Meadowbank-St Johns and Kohimarama-Orakei needed a school. Ngata Pitcaithly was its first principal. Selwyn College became a multicultural hub. Its location in the eastern suburbs fostered strong ties with Ngati Whatua-o-Orakei.

The college isn’t just about academics. Selwyn College boasts a magnificent theatre. It’s one of the largest in any New Zealand public school. Think annual musicals and multicultural shows showcasing the school’s diverse community.

Selwyn College also played a vital role in supporting refugees. After the 2001 Tampa affair many refugees arrived in New Zealand. Selwyn College stepped up. They educated these new arrivals. The school even runs a Refugee Education for Adults and Families program REAF. The Carol White Family Centre opened in 2004. This boosted the REAF program’s success.

Selwyn College’s history isn’t without its challenges. The years leading up to 2008 were tumultuous. Local residents and MP Allan Peachey criticized the school. They cited falling enrollment and alleged academic and disciplinary issues. However parents teachers and students defended Selwyn College. They viewed the criticisms as unfair. Peachey even had to publicly apologize for an offensive email.

In 2009 the government dissolved the school’s board. A commissioner took over due to long-standing conflicts. However things improved. A new uniform was introduced to help rebrand the college. Academic results improved significantly. A Selwyn College year 12 student topped New Zealand in a 2009 Cambridge International AS Level exam.

The turnaround was dramatic. NCEA Level 1 pass rates soared from 39% to 93% in seven years. By 2013 pass rates reached 93% at Level 1 94% at Level 2 and 90% at Level 3. Education Professor John Hattie called this progress stunning. He highlighted the impact of inspired passionate leadership focused on students. Principal Sheryll Ofner won the 2017 Woolf Fisher Award for Education and Excellence. This included a trip to Harvard University and across Europe.

Selwyn College’s success extends beyond academics. In 2016 four students won the Auckland Schools Debating Advanced Open Competition. The school is also home to the Barfoot & Thompson Stadium. This venue hosts numerous sporting events local national and international. Selwyn College’s legacy is one of resilience adaptation and outstanding achievement. It’s a place where students thrive and leave a mark on the world. From its humble beginnings to its current success Selwyn College continues to shape lives and contribute to New Zealand’s rich tapestry.
