Who was Selime Hatun? She was one of the wives of the Grand Admiral Kılıç Ali Pasha. We are standing before the Selime Hatun Camii today. This beautiful mosque carries her name.
Some sources suggest Qadhi of Istanbul Ibrahim Effendi was the founder. But mostly Selime Hatun is known as the founder. The exact architect remains unknown.
The Selime Hatun Camii showcases Ottoman architectural features. Its brick masonry structure speaks of a bygone era. You can observe the period’s architectural nuances in its masonry walls. Also the wooden roof adds to its charm.
Imagine the scene when it was newly built. This mosque has seen numerous repairs since its construction. The minaret faced a dramatic collapse. It fell to the roof floor level. The residents rebuilt it.
The mosque exudes a simple aesthetic. Inside you will find a flat ceiling, wooden mihrab and pulpit. Notice the plastered mihrab section. It is understated but elegant.
The Selime Hatun Camii is not vast. It stands on a 90 m² plot. However, it is complete. The total area is 135 m². This includes the garden, staff lodging, toilets and ablution areas.
Step inside and feel the historical atmosphere. The mosque carpets are made of 100% wool yarn. These carpets feature Ottoman motifs. This design choice preserves its historical ambiance.
