Gazing upon this seemingly ordinary expanse, it’s hard to imagine the echoes of history resonating within Seletar Camp. Seletar Camp, nestled in northern Singapore, whispers stories of a bygone era. It stands as a testament to the island’s rich military past. Seletar Camp’s story began in 1928 as a bustling Royal Air Force base, a cornerstone of British power in the Far East. It was a crucial link on the England-Australia air route. Even Charlie Chaplin graced its grounds. During World War II, Seletar Camp experienced a dramatic shift. The Japanese seized control, renaming it Seretar Hikojo. The scars of war are etched into its history. After the war, the British returned, and Seletar Camp continued its service. Eventually, it transitioned to the Singapore Armed Forces in 1971, marking a new chapter in its life. Seletar Camp then became home to numerous combat engineer units. It also housed the Command and Staff College from 1982 to 1995. The camp’s footprint has shrunk over time. Parts have been repurposed for civilian use. The Seletar Aerospace Park now thrives on former camp grounds. Yet, amidst the modernization, echoes of the past linger. “Black and white” colonial bungalows, once homes to RAF personnel, still stand. Some have found new life as offices, schools, and even restaurants. The old lamp posts, silent witnesses to decades of change, are possibly the oldest functioning ones in Singapore. Seletar Camp, a place where history takes flight, where whispers of the past mingle with the hum of progress.
