“Did the earth tremble here?” a young voice piped up, breaking the silence as we stood overlooking the Sekyere Kumawu District. No, young one, not from an earthquake. The Sekyere Kumawu District, nestled in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, trembled with the winds of change. It was carved from the larger Sekyere East District in 2007, officially inaugurated in 2008. The District, with its capital Kumawu a mere 54 kilometers northeast of Kumasi, covers a vast 1,500.6 square kilometers. This represents a significant 6.2% of the entire Ashanti Region. Imagine the vibrant tapestry of life spread across this land. The Sekyere Kumawu District is bordered by a host of other districts. Sekyere Central District lies to the west. Sekyere East District stretches to the north. Asante Akim North Municipality sits to the southwest. Sekyere Afram Plains District completes the circle to the south. The Sekyere Kumawu District itself experienced a further division in 2012, giving birth to the new Sekyere Afram Plains District. The remaining portion proudly retained its name and its capital, Kumawu. This district is more than just lines on a map. It’s a vibrant community of over 64,000 people, according to the 2020 census. The Sekyere Kumawu District Assembly, established on March 15, 2012, works tirelessly to improve the quality of life for all its residents. Its vision is to become a beacon of development, providing excellent services and fostering a brighter future for the people of Sekyere Kumawu. The district is also rich in tradition. It houses one paramountcy, Kumawu, where traditional authorities play a vital role in development and conflict resolution. Beyond the bustling town of Kumawu, the Sekyere Kumawu District boasts vast tracts of fertile land. This agricultural heartland is ideal for cultivating both commercial crops like cocoa, oil palm, and coconut, and staple food crops such as maize and cassava. This rich agricultural potential, combined with opportunities in tourism, housing, and climate change interventions, positions the Sekyere Kumawu District as a land of promise and opportunity.
