Sekyere South District rests in the northeastern embrace of the Ashanti Region. It’s a mere 37 kilometers from the bustling city of Kumasi, along the well-trodden Kumasi-Mampong trunk road. The Sekyere South District sprawls across 416.8 square kilometers. This represents about 1.7 percent of the Ashanti Region’s total land area. Imagine standing within this district, bordered by other significant areas. To the north lies Ejura Sekyedumase Municipal. To the east, you’ll find Mampong Municipal and Sekyere East District. The southern border touches Kwabre East Municipal, and to the west, Offinso Municipality completes the encirclement. Sekyere South District is more than just lines on a map. It’s a place of thriving communities. The 2021 census revealed a population of 120,076, with a slight majority of females at 62,011 compared to 58,065 males. Within this district, you’ll discover Agona, the administrative capital. Agona isn’t just a center of governance. It holds a significant piece of Ashanti history, housing the shrine of the revered Okomfo Anokye. He’s the legendary conjuror of the Golden Stool, a powerful symbol of Ashanti unity. The Sekyere South District also boasts natural beauty. The River Offin meanders through the land. It begins its journey in the mountains at Dawu in Jamasi, flowing through various communities before eventually leaving the district. The landscape is a mix of forest and savannah, punctuated by two forest reserves: Offin Forest Reserve and Gye Anoma Forest Reserve. The district’s economy thrives on agriculture. Cocoa, timber, maize, cassava, plantain, oranges, and various vegetables are cultivated here. The majority of the inhabitants are hardworking farmers, contributing to the rich tapestry of life in Sekyere South District.
