Established in 1962 Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Jelutong initially called Jelutong Secondary School started with just eleven classes in a two-story building. Its first principal was the late En Keong Siew Tat. The school’s motto was “Adopt and Adapt”. The school grew adding buildings and facilities for students and teachers under subsequent principals.
In 1972 Jelutong Secondary School became Sekolah Menengah Jelutong. The school’s motto changed to “Berdikari dan Berbakti” which means self-reliance and service. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Jelutong continued rapid physical development under new leadership. Fundraising projects upgraded school buildings creating a more conducive learning environment.
On April 15 1996 the school launched the Special Education Integration Program for Learning Disabilities PPKI. This was the first such program in a Penang secondary school. It began with two students and one teacher. Before the COVID-19 pandemic Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Jelutong actively participated in sports including students in the PPKI program.
The school’s logo features beige and dark green a symbol of completeness signifying students graduating as well-rounded citizens. The inner circle represents the education provided and student dedication. Another inner circle shows students’ thirst for knowledge loyalty and the school’s role in shaping them for various societal roles. The dark green crescent signifies Malaysia’s Islamic heritage. The school’s motto “Berdikari dan Berbakti” inspires students to achieve independence and serve their school state and country.

Today Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Jelutong has 602 students 75 teachers and 14 staff. It stands as a proud testament to educational dedication in Georgetown. It continues to shape young lives inspiring self-reliance and service to their community and country.
