Opened in 1977, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Hamid Khan has a fascinating history. The school, located in Island Glades, Penang, Malaysia, wasn’t always known by this name. It started as an all-girls school called Island Glades Girls School. Later, it became a co-educational institution and was renamed Sekolah Menengah Island Glades. Finally, it received its current name, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Hamid Khan. This was to honor Captain Hamid Khan for his contributions to the education ministry before Malaysia’s independence. Imagine the school in its early days in 1977. There were only 272 students and twelve teachers. The Minister of Education, Y.B. Dr. Michael Toyad, officially opened the school on July 25th, 1977. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Hamid Khan now boasts approximately 750 students. Think about the generations of students who have walked these halls since then. The school’s motto, “Hidup Sambil Belajar” which translates to “Study As You Live,” reflects its commitment to holistic education. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Hamid Khan consistently achieves impressive results. The average passing rate for national level examinations like SPM and PMR is over 90%. This speaks volumes about the dedication of the teachers and the hard work of the students.
