Back in 1955 it all began. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Georgetown wasn’t a grand building then. It started humbly as pilot classes. These classes were held in the afternoon at Penang Free School. The school building wasn’t finished yet. Imagine those first students learning in borrowed space.
The school’s early years saw a proposed change. It was meant to become Georgetown Secondary Modern School. This school would have taught technical commercial and academic subjects. The plan never happened though. Only seven classes existed at Penang Free School.
A motto was chosen. “Una Mente” it declared. This means “one mind” or unity. A powerful aspiration for a new school. A unified vision for education. This motto has resonated through the years.
By April 1956 the new school building was ready. The students and headmaster moved to Lorong Batu Lanchang. The school was small then. It only had students in Forms One and Two. Official opening was on May 16 1957. The Resident Commissioner of Penang Mr R P Bingham performed the ceremony.
For a time girls attended SMK Georgetown. This was in the 1960s. The school became all-boys. This practice lasted for decades. Then in 2001 girls returned. They have been a vital part of the school ever since. The school has been educating generations of students ever since.
Today Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Georgetown stands tall. It’s a testament to its enduring legacy. Its location in Lorong Batu Lanchang remains. It has grown. It has changed. It has served its community well. It is a place of learning and achievement. A beacon of education in Penang. Its history is a fascinating journey. A journey of growth and adaptation. It continues to shape the future. It serves as a reminder of the importance of education. The school’s motto “Una Mente” still resonates today. It inspires unity and learning.
