Deep in the heart of Air Itam, Penang, lies a school steeped in history and tradition: Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Sin Kang. Its story begins not here, amidst the modern buildings of Farlim, but over a century ago in the bustling heart of Georgetown. In 1906, the Khoo Kongsi, a prominent Chinese clan association, envisioned a school for their children. This dream blossomed into the Khoo Liang Deng School, initially nestled within the clan’s headquarters at Cannon Square. As the school grew, it journeyed from the halls of Chung Hwa School to the shophouses of Victoria Street, eventually adopting the name Sin Kang School, a tribute to the Khoo clan’s ancestral village. The Second World War brought a temporary halt to Sin Kang’s story, but the Khoo Kongsi’s dedication remained unwavering. In the aftermath, they rallied, securing land in Thean Teik Estate and raising funds to rebuild. The new Sin Kang School opened its doors in 1954. Just a few years later, in 1958, Sin Kang School became Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Sin Kang, a national school. The growth of Farlim township brought a new wave of students, necessitating further expansion. A partnership with the Farlim Group led to the construction of the modern building you see today, completed in 1993. From its humble beginnings to its present-day stature, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Sin Kang stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Khoo Kongsi and their commitment to education. It is a story etched in stone and whispered through generations, a vibrant thread in the rich tapestry of Penang’s history.
