Who was Sekbanbaşı Abdurrahman Ağa? Here at the Sekbanbaşı Abdurrahman Ağa Türbesi, we unravel the story of this remarkable figure. The Sekbanbaşı Abdurrahman Ağa Türbesi stands near the Ayakapı city gate. This tomb holds the remains of a soldier who fell during the Conquest of Istanbul in 1453. Sekbanbaşı Abdurrahman Ağa, as his title suggests, was a leader of the Sekbans. The Sekbans were an elite military unit, crucial to the Janissary corps, especially when the Janissary Ağa was absent from Istanbul. Abdurrahman Ağa was laid to rest where he fell, a testament to his bravery. The tomb and the small mosque above it were initially commissioned by Ahmet Çelebi. Later, during the reign of Sultan I. Mahmud, Grand Vizier Nişancı Şehla Ahmed Pasha renovated both structures between 1740 and 1742. He also added a police station next to them. Today, the Sekbanbaşı Abdurrahman Ağa Türbesi stands as a two-story wooden structure. The tomb itself is on the first floor. While the door might be closed, you can glimpse the shrouded sarcophagus through the window, a silent reminder of a life lost in the conquest of a city. The Sekbanbaşı Abdurrahman Ağa Türbesi is more than just a tomb. It is a tangible link to the dramatic events of 1453 and the men who shaped the course of history.
