Sekbanbaşı Abdurrahman Ağa, as his title suggests, was a leader of the Sekbans. The Sekbans were an elite military unit, crucial to the Janissary corps, especially when the Janissary Ağa was absent from Istanbul. Abdurrahman Ağa was laid to rest where he fell, a testament to his bravery. The tomb and the small mosque above it were initially commissioned by Ahmet Çelebi. Later, during the reign of Sultan I. Mahmud, Grand Vizier Nişancı Şehla Ahmed Pasha renovated both structures between 1740 and 1742. He also added a police station next to them.
