Here stands a testament to a life tragically cut short. I am talking about the Şehit Süleyman Paşa Camii. This mosque carries a poignant tale of injustice and posthumous recognition.
Süleyman Paşa served as the Grand Vizier to Sultan IV Mehmet. He was known as a gentle and composed man. A miscommunication regarding his orders to aid Muslims in Eger castle in Hungary led to his execution on the first day of Kurban Bayramı.
However the Sultan realized that the execution was unjust. Süleyman Paşa was posthumously honored with the title şehit meaning martyr. This title reflects the acknowledgment of his wrongful death.
The Şehit Süleyman Paşa Camii is located where Viransaray Street meets Doğancılar Halk Street in Üsküdar. Süleyman Paşa had this small elegant mosque built of cut stone. He also commissioned a fountain and a school next to the mosque.
After his death, Süleyman Paşa was buried in the mosque’s courtyard. Information about his martyrdom is inscribed on the fountain’s inscription. It is on the right corner of the mosque near the minaret.
The courtyard is also the final resting place of Topal Recep Paşa. Sultan IV Murad had him executed. Several other important statesmen are also buried here.
The minaret was destroyed in the great earthquake of 1894. Locals rebuilt it along with the mosque in its current form between 1957 and 1958. The mosque is bordered by a cemetery on its left and towards the qibla.
The cemetery is not well maintained but contains many tombstones including those of Şehit Süleyman Paşa and Recep Paşa. A fountain stands near Süleyman Paşa’s grave next to the courtyard wall. During repairs the inscription was placed on the fountain and a window was closed.
Until 1970 the fountain’s large reservoir was located further up the sloping street. The Şehit Süleyman Paşa Camii stands as a reminder of a complex past where justice was sometimes belated but not forgotten. It is a place of reflection and remembrance in the heart of Üsküdar.
