You might think that \u015eehadet Cami has always been about the life and death of Sultan Murad I, the first Ottoman sultan to fall in battle. Well, not exactly! This mosque is a true survivor, having been built and rebuilt several times!
The first \u015eehadet Cami was built by Sultan Murad I himself back in 1365. He wanted to have a mosque near his palace, the Bey Saray, a symbol of the Ottoman power in Bursa. It was a large mosque, with lots of columns and domes. The fact that it stood next to the palace highlighted the strong connection between the Ottomans and their faith!
But fate wasn’t kind to this mosque. An earthquake in 1855 destroyed it, and in the late 19th century, it was rebuilt by one of the governors of Bursa. He wanted to make it more “modern,” so he used a different style of architecture, incorporating Gothic elements that were fashionable in Europe at the time. This is why the mosque looks different from the original version.
Today, we see the \u015eehadet Cami as a testament to both the past and the present. The surviving parts of the original mosque have been preserved in the current building, and the way the mosque was rebuilt shows us the way architecture reflects the changing times. You don’t have to be a historian to get a sense of the mosque’s fascinating story. Just stepping inside, you can already feel the weight of history and the enduring nature of faith in this place!
