A whisper of history hangs in the air. This is the Segítő Szűz Mária-kápolna.

This unassuming chapel stands before you. It holds secrets within its walls. Secrets whispered from generation to generation. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to faith. It’s a legacy of the Polish Catholic community in Budapest.

In 1907 a group of Polish Catholics living in Budapest had a request. They desired to use the existing chapel in Óhegy. A kind priest Father Vince Danek answered their prayers. He became their spiritual leader in 1908. Using donations from Polish Catholics in Hungary Poland and America he built the chapel we see today. Architect Aladár Árkay designed it. The chapel was completed in 1930. Archbishop August Hlond consecrated it on August 17th.

But the story of the Segítő Szűz Mária-kápolna goes further back. Much further. Before the Polish community it served another purpose. It was once part of the Conti family’s estate. Its origins trace back to 1740. A testament to enduring faith through changing times. The chapel was originally built by Antal Conti Lipót a master woodcarver.

The Segítő Szűz Mária-kápolna has changed over the years. It has been expanded and renovated. It’s endured war and societal shifts. Yet it remains a place of worship. A beacon of hope for generations. It is a symbol of resilience. It’s a testament to the unwavering faith of the Polish community. And it stands as a silent observer of Budapest’s rich and complex history.

Today the Segítő Szűz Mária-kápolna stands as a reminder. A reminder of the enduring power of faith. It’s a powerful symbol of community. It’s a treasure tucked away in Budapest. Take a moment. Appreciate this quiet sanctuary. Let its history resonate within you. This humble chapel has much to tell. It whispers stories of devotion. It echoes with the prayers of countless souls. The Segítő Szűz Mária-kápolna is more than a place of worship. It is a living part of Budapest’s past present and future.
