Established on January 8 1884 the Segelverein Weser boasts a rich history. Twenty-eight passionate sailors founded this club. It’s not just Bremen’s oldest sailing club but one of Germany’s oldest too. Initially their boats were moored at a city-granted plot along the Weser River. The club’s first boathouse was afloat. In 1913 it was replaced by a sturdy clubhouse. Many regattas were held here on the Weser.
World War I interrupted the club’s activities. Regattas resumed in 1919. A significant change came with the democratization of Germany and women’s suffrage. The club’s bylaws were updated welcoming female members. That same year the Segelverein Weser founded its youth section. This happened even without its own boats. Enthusiastic young people were still taught sailing theory and practice.
Membership grew steadily until World War II. The youth section even acquired three new dinghies. They participated in Olympic selection trials. The war brought sailing to a standstill. Many members served in the military. Allied bombing raids severely damaged the harbor and the club’s facilities. During the occupation the boathouse became a command center first for the British later for the Americans. Another sailing club the Stadion Boat Club was formed. The Segelverein Weser’s assets were confiscated. Bomb damage to the wooden retaining wall was later replaced by the Americans with a sturdy steel one.
In 1947 the Segelverein Weser rallied its members. They salvaged their sunken boats and repaired the club. A celebratory reopening took place that September. In more recent times the Segelverein Weser has achieved remarkable feats. In 2010 its patent3 crew won the offshore sailing world championship. They became vice-world champions in 2012.
Today the Segelverein Weser remains a vibrant hub for sailing enthusiasts of all ages. Its youth section thrives welcoming children and young people aged 10 to 22.
