Have you ever seen a six-winged windmill? Segalt Mølle stands proudly before you. This remarkable structure is unique in all of Denmark. Its six wings are a testament to a rather unusual dispute.

Segalt Mølle in Løgten near Aarhus has a fascinating history. It wasn’t always a six-winged marvel. The original mill built in 1854 had only four wings. Sadly a fire in 1868 destroyed it. A similar mill was rebuilt. Around 1880 it was taken down and rebuilt again.

The story of its six wings begins in 1893. The miller had a disagreement with a neighbor. The neighbor’s tall trees blocked the wind from the mill’s sails. The neighbor refused to cut down the trees. The resourceful miller’s solution? He built the mill taller. He also added two extra wings. In 1899 these new wings were fitted with special shutters.

For many years Segalt Mølle also housed a bakery. It produced rye bread until 1975 when milling operations ceased. Today the mill has been converted into apartments.

Segalt Mølle is octagonal. Its base is made of stone. The upper part is wood and clad in shingles. It’s a self-orienting mill with a wind rose. The mill’s grinding mechanism is special. It uses a secondary star wheel system for its underdrive. This is a clever bit of engineering.

The current owners renovated it extensively. This included new wings and a new cap in 2010. They were financed by grants. They often sit on the walkway around the mill. They enjoy the view of the countryside. They can even see the Aarhus Bay.

Segalt Mølle is a testament to human ingenuity. It’s a unique blend of history and modern living. It’s a remarkable sight that continues to captivate visitors. Its six wings whisper tales of conflict and resilience. They stand as a symbol of a bygone era. They remind us of the ingenuity of the miller who faced his challenge head-on. Isn’t it magnificent?
