Flowing from the majestic Upper Lake Constance to the Lower Lake, the Seerhein stands before us. This 4.3-kilometer river is more than just a waterway. It is a vibrant thread in the region’s history. Did you know that the water level of the Lower Lake is about 30 cm below the Upper Lake?

The Seerhein emerged after the last ice age. Around 9650 BCE, the water level of Lake Constance gradually dropped. This exposed shallow areas. Today, some parts of the Seerhein retain a lake-like character.

Now, look around you. Notice how the German city of Konstanz flanks both sides of the upper Seerhein. As we move further west, the river marks the border between Germany and Switzerland. The municipalities of Tägerwilen and Gottlieben border the Seerhein on the Swiss side.

Interestingly, the Seerhein flows through a depression known as Seetal or Konstanzer Niederung. This valley is bordered by the Seerücken to the south and the Bodanrück peninsula to the north. The Swiss lovingly call this depression Seetal.

But there’s more to the Seerhein than just scenic beauty. It is a navigable river. Pleasure boats from the Schweizerischen Schifffahrtsgesellschaft Untersee und Rhein frequently cruise its waters. Historically, the Seerhein has been a strategic point.

Three bridges span the Seerhein. The Old Rhine Bridge in Constance, dating back to late antiquity, marks the easternmost point. Further west, the Seerheinbrücke, a pedestrian and cycle bridge, was built in 1991. The Schänzlebrücke carries the German Federal Highway 33.

Imagine this: In ancient times, the Seerhein served as the northern boundary of the Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages, it divided the legislative areas of Thurgau and Hegau. It also marked the northern boundary of the City of Constance.

An interesting story surrounds the water miracle of Constance. On February 23, 1549, the Seerhein’s level rose and fell dramatically. This happened every quarter hour. Fishermen on the Lower Lake even reported the Rhine flowing backwards.

Scientists now explain this phenomenon. Specific wind conditions excite the natural frequency of the upper and lower lakes. This creates a seiche, a standing wave. Constance, being close to an anti-node in this wave, experienced a particularly visible effect.

Today, the embankments of the Seerhein in Constance are lively. They buzz with activity. Boats moor along the shores. Industrial estates have been replaced by residential areas with parks. The inner city Rhine Beach beckons visitors to the North bank.

Historically significant buildings dot the Seerhein area. Remains of Constance’s fortifications stand tall. Petershausen Abbey and Gottlieben Castle add to the rich tapestry. Former factories in Stromeyersdorf whisper tales of industrial past.

So, as we stand here by the Seerhein, remember that this river is not just a connection between two lakes. It is a historic artery. It has shaped borders, influenced settlements and witnessed natural wonders. It is a vital part of the Konstanz story.
