Around 1150 German settlers founded Seehausen. Seehausen a northern district of Leipzig has a rich history. It first appears in documents around 1359 as Sehusen. The farmers then declared their obligations to the city of Leipzig. In 1438 Elector Frederick II appointed Conrad Bruser as liege lord.

Seehausen’s history is interwoven with Leipzig’s. By 1551 twenty-two farmers owned land. Nine men owned no land. The villagers built a school by 1580 a testament to their community spirit. The Thirty Years War impacted Seehausen. The Battle of Breitenfeld in 1631 took place nearby. This battle drastically altered the course of European history. It’s a pivotal event few connect to this quiet Leipzig district.

A devastating fire in 1791 destroyed many properties. This tragedy is part of Seehausen’s story. Seehausen’s church also has a long and fascinating history. Initially a Romanesque choir tower church it was built in the 13th century. The Reformation reached Seehausen in 1539. The church became Protestant.

The parish property was sold in 1560 for 150 guilders. The church underwent renovations in 1663 costing 174 thalers. Around the 15th century the tiny Romanesque windows were replaced with taller Gothic ones. The church received a new altar. Further interior renovations took place in 1770. The lord’s coat of arms was added to the altar.

Seehausen boasts a unique feature. It sits on a plain of about 18 square kilometers. Several streams including the Parthe run through it. This river originates in Elster and flows to the Elbe. The Parthe’s gentle currents have shaped Seehausen’s landscape for centuries. A local detail many overlook.

Today Seehausen features a church a fire department and an elementary school. The school also serves as a daycare center. A widely known golf course is another notable landmark.
