Established on Christmas Day 1947 under Reverend J J Tibbs the Second Union Baptist Church began its journey. The small congregation initially met on McAllister Street. Their faith was their guide. Their love their bond.

Growth was rapid. By 1951 over 200 members filled the church. They moved to a larger space on Golden Gate Avenue. Reverend Warren Thomas Adams a leader from the First Union Baptist Church became their pastor. His guidance and the Holy Spirit nurtured the congregation’s growth. They expanded their mission and evangelistic programs.

The Golden Gate location proved too small. The church relocated to its current home at 749 Page Street. This building a former dance hall and concert venue. It stands as a powerful symbol of God’s provision. The congregation marched from their old home over the hills to Page Street. They celebrated their new sanctuary with a vibrant procession. The community welcomed them. The church adopted the motto “From a dance hall to a house of prayer”. Membership soared over 600. The mortgage was paid off by 1980.

Reverend Adams and First Lady Eulalia Adams served the church for 53 years. They baptized over 1500 people. They welcomed thousands into the Christian faith. Thirteen members went on to the ministry. The church broadcast its services for 41 years on KSOL and KEST Radio. This is truly remarkable outreach.

After Reverend Adams’ passing Reverend Calvin Ellison took over. He and his wife Lois continued the church’s legacy. They guided the four-phase renovation. They also led with love compassion and humility.

The Second Union Baptist Church faced challenges. The loss of beloved leaders tested their faith. Yet the congregation persevered. They continued their worship their mission their community service. They showed the true strength of their faith.

Today the Second Union Baptist Church continues its important work. Under Pastor Damonn White’s leadership the church embraces its future.
