Perhaps you’ve heard the echoes of laughter and intellectual debate that drift from the heart of Seattle’s First Hill. This is Seattle University. It is a private Jesuit university. Seattle University stands as the largest independent university in the Northwestern United States. Over 7500 students pursue their academic dreams within its six schools.
Originally, Seattle University started humbly. In 1891, Father Adrian Sweere took charge of a small parish school near downtown Seattle. It was named after the Immaculate Conception parish. Higher education wasn’t initially part of the plan. By 1898, the school was renamed Seattle College. It was named after the city, which in turn was named after Chief Seattle.
Fast forward to 1948. Seattle College embraced its present identity as Seattle University. Albert A. Lemieux was president during this pivotal time. The campus spans 55 acres. It is an urban oasis recognized for its dedication to sustainability. Pesticide-free grounds and a food waste compost facility are some of the sustainable practices. Recycling and energy conservation programs also contribute to sustainability.
Speaking of art, Seattle University boasts an impressive collection. The Centennial Fountain by George Tsutakawa and a glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly enhance the campus. Works by Chuck Close, Jacob Lawrence and others are also displayed. These works enrich the university’s aesthetic appeal.
Did you know that Seattle University has a radio station. KXSU-LP broadcasts on 102.1 FM. It is a student-run operation. The radio station provides hands-on experience in writing, reporting, and broadcasting.
Seattle University offers a wide range of academic programs. There are 65 bachelor’s degree programs and 31 graduate degree programs. Students can pursue 27 certificate programs. The School of Law and a doctoral program in education are also available. The Albers School of Business and Economics, established in 1945, is named after the Albers family. Their generous donations shaped the school. The College of Arts and Sciences is the oldest undergraduate college. It offers many majors and minors. The graduate program in psychology emphasizes existential phenomenology.
The Redhawk Center is a hub for sports. It hosts basketball and volleyball games. It was previously named after Archbishop Thomas Connolly. The name was changed due to his involvement in covering up sex crimes. Seattle University’s athletic history is full of highlights. In 1958, Elgin Baylor led the basketball team to the Final Four.
Interestingly, Seattle University became the first in Washington to divest from fossil fuels. This action shows its commitment to environmental responsibility.
