Seattle Preparatory School

Stepping onto the grounds of Seattle Preparatory School, one can almost feel the weight of history and tradition. Seattle Prep, as it’s affectionately known, stands as a testament to Jesuit education. Established in 1891, Seattle Preparatory School has been shaping young minds for over a century. Originally named the School of the Immaculate Conception, it began its journey in downtown Seattle. The school later merged with Immaculate Conception Parish School and became part of Seattle College. For a time, from 1919 to 1931, Seattle College resided entirely on the current site of Seattle Prep. The two institutions eventually separated, with Seattle University returning to First Hill. Seattle Prep remained, a steadfast beacon of learning on Capitol Hill. The school’s motto, “Virtus in Arduis” (Virtue in Hard Work), reflects the Jesuit commitment to rigorous academics. Students at Seattle Prep engage in a demanding curriculum. From arts and sciences to mathematics, the school offers a wide array of courses. Freshmen are placed in classes based on placement tests, ensuring they are challenged appropriately. This continues throughout their time at Seattle Prep, allowing students to pursue advanced courses like AP Calculus and AP Physics. Beyond the classroom, Seattle Prep boasts a vibrant extracurricular scene. From Film Club and Mock Trial to social justice clubs like the Global Justice Coalition and Black Student Union, there’s something for everyone. The school also has a strong athletic tradition. Its teams, known as the Panthers, have won numerous league and state titles in various sports, including soccer, volleyball, and basketball. The school also has a four-year Magis Christian Service Program. This program instills the value of service to family, school, the marginalized, and ultimately, leadership for justice. The campus itself has seen significant growth and renovation over the years. McDonnell Hall, Peyton Hall, and St. Ignatius Hall stand as testaments to the school’s evolving needs. The PACCAR Commons, completed in 2007, provides modern office spaces and a sick room, while the Thomas Healy, S.J. Theater hosts school events and masses. Seattle Preparatory School continues to inspire and educate, carrying its rich history into a bright future.
