Founded in 1891 Seattle Pacific University SPU boasts a rich history. Originally established as Seattle Seminary its mission was to train missionaries. This small seminary expanded over time. It became Seattle Seminary and College then Seattle Pacific College. Finally in 1977 it received its current name Seattle Pacific University. SPU’s early years were marked by humble beginnings. It started on land donated by Mr and Mrs Nels B Peterson in a neighborhood then known as Ross Station. The first permanent building designed by John B Parkinson was completed in 1893. The seminary held its first classes that spring.

Today SPU stands as a private Christian university. It’s known for its commitment to faith academics and community engagement. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. These programs span arts and sciences business education health sciences psychology and theology. SPU also has a renowned Honors program called University Scholars. It challenges students to explore the question What does it mean to be human? The university has faced its share of challenges. A tragic shooting in 2014 shook the community. Its clocktower features a bas-relief sculpture depicting Science Religion and Humanities. Gwinn Commons houses the main dining hall and event spaces. The Ames Library holds over 250000 volumes. Peterson Hall houses the School of Education. The Student Union Building is a central gathering place. Eaton Hall houses the science labs. McKenna Hall houses the School of Business Government and Economics.

SPU also has five residence halls plus additional apartments. These residences provide a variety of housing options for its students. SPU’s athletic teams compete in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. They are part of the NCAA Division II. SPU boasts a distinguished list of alumni.
