Founded in 1891 Seattle Pacific University SPU boasts a rich history. Originally established as Seattle Seminary its mission was to train missionaries. This small seminary expanded over time. It became Seattle Seminary and College then Seattle Pacific College. Finally in 1977 it received its current name Seattle Pacific University. SPU’s early years were marked by humble beginnings. It started on land donated by Mr and Mrs Nels B Peterson in a neighborhood then known as Ross Station. The first permanent building designed by John B Parkinson was completed in 1893. The seminary held its first classes that spring.

Today SPU stands as a private Christian university. It’s known for its commitment to faith academics and community engagement. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. These programs span arts and sciences business education health sciences psychology and theology. SPU also has a renowned Honors program called University Scholars. It challenges students to explore the question What does it mean to be human? The university has faced its share of challenges. A tragic shooting in 2014 shook the community. More recently SPU has been involved in legal battles concerning its hiring policies. Despite these challenges SPU continues to thrive. It’s a vibrant institution with a strong sense of community. SPU’s beautiful campus occupies 43 acres. It sits on Queen Anne Hill near Fremont. Many of its trees are among Seattle’s oldest. The university also owns satellite campuses. One is a wilderness field station on Blakely Island. Another is Camp Casey a former military fort on Whidbey Island. Notable buildings on the main campus include Alexander and Adelaide Hall. It’s the oldest building home to the School of Theology. Demaray Hall is the central academic building. It houses classrooms and administrative offices. Its clocktower features a bas-relief sculpture depicting Science Religion and Humanities. Gwinn Commons houses the main dining hall and event spaces. The Ames Library holds over 250000 volumes. Peterson Hall houses the School of Education. The Student Union Building is a central gathering place. Eaton Hall houses the science labs. McKenna Hall houses the School of Business Government and Economics.

SPU also has five residence halls plus additional apartments. These residences provide a variety of housing options for its students. SPU’s athletic teams compete in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. They are part of the NCAA Division II. SPU boasts a distinguished list of alumni. This includes notable figures in various fields. They are from the arts to business to politics. Seattle Pacific University SPU truly stands as a significant institution.
