Gazing at the Seattle Formosan Christian Church, imagine its humble beginnings. It started in October 1969 as a small bible study group. They met at the Japanese Congregational Church near Seattle’s International District. The Seattle Formosan Christian Church eventually grew. They began holding regular Sunday services at University Baptist Church near the University of Washington. Pastor Ai-chi Tsai led these early services. In 1984, a pivotal moment arrived for the Seattle Formosan Christian Church. Pastor Joshua Liu became the senior pastor. He served the church faithfully for 23 years, finally retiring at the end of 2006. A series of pastors then guided the Taiwanese congregation. Pastor John Chen served from January 2007 to June 2009. Later, in July 2012, Pastor Ian Cheng took on the role of Taiwanese Ministry Pastor. The Seattle Formosan Christian Church also nurtured an English-speaking community. This began as a youth ministry and officially became the English Ministry in 1996. Pastor Solomon Liu was the first pastor for this growing congregation of young adults, professionals, and families. In March 2007, Pastor Walter Chen joined as associate pastor for the English Ministry. The current building, acquired in 1987, has a capacity of over 300 people. Today, the Seattle Formosan Christian Church offers multiple Sunday services. The Taiwanese service runs from 9:30 am to 10:45 am, with Mandarin Chinese and English translations provided. The English service follows from 11:15 am to 12:30 pm. The church also has a Mandarin-speaking ministry, as well as vibrant children’s and youth programs. The Seattle Formosan Christian Church supports its members through various fellowships, small groups, and Sunday school classes for both children and adults. Deacons play a crucial role, particularly in welcoming new families and students. This church is a testament to the power of faith and community. It has grown from a small gathering to a thriving multicultural congregation.
