Born from the shadow of a major airport SeaTac is more than just a name. It’s a community. SeaTac a city in southern King County Washington. Its name a portmanteau of Seattle and Tacoma. SeaTac’s story begins with the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The airport itself a massive undertaking. It spurred growth and shaped the identity of this unique town.

Before SeaTac existed. The Highline area was settled by European Americans in the mid-1850s. A military road connected Fort Steilacoom to Fort Bellingham in 1860. This road passed through what is now SeaTac. Early travel between Seattle and Tacoma was important. Des Moines Memorial Drive was a major thoroughfare. It runs right through SeaTac and Burien.

In the 1980s locals proposed incorporating the area as a city. There was a competing proposal. It suggested annexation into Des Moines or another city. Residents voted for incorporation on March 14 1989. The city officially incorporated in February 1990. The original ballot used the name Sea-Tac. The hyphen was later omitted.

SeaTac is a blend of old and new. Established communities like Angle Lake Bow Lake McMicken Heights and Riverton Heights predate the city’s incorporation. These neighborhoods each hold unique histories and stories. They contribute to SeaTac’s vibrant tapestry. In 2014 a writer observed that SeaTac was once a middle-class town. A jet-fueller or baggage handler could earn a decent living.

Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air have their headquarters in SeaTac. Other airlines like Asiana EVA Air Hainan Airlines and China Airlines also operate in the city.

A significant event was the passage of Proposition 1 in 2013. This proposition raised the minimum wage to $15 per hour for airport-related businesses. This landmark decision had national implications. It highlighted SeaTac’s commitment to fair labor practices. The debate over this minimum wage lasted for years culminating in a Washington Supreme Court decision. It ultimately upheld SeaTac’s right to set the higher minimum wage.

SeaTac’s government is council-manager form. The King County Sheriff’s Office provides law enforcement. The SeaTac Fire Department works with the Kent Fire Department. They are part of the Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority. The Seatac Municipal Court handles civil traffic and criminal matters. The Public Works department is vital. It manages streets transportation water utilities and recycling programs.

SeaTac offers more than just jobs and businesses. It has seven parks and two community centers. Angle Lake Park is a highlight. It features a boat launch fishing pier and a spray park. Bow Lake Park is another popular spot. North SeaTac Park has a community center sports fields and walking trails. SeaTac’s location is key. State Route 99 State Route 518 and the Airport Expressway serve the city. Portions of Interstate 5 and State Route 509 are also within city limits. SeaTac is connected to a larger transportation network. This includes Link light rail. The SeaTac/Airport and Angle Lake stations offer easy access to public transportation. King County Metro buses RapidRide lines and Sound Transit Express buses also service the area.
