Sweeping across the sky, magnificent albatrosses grace the Seafowl rookeries of the Auckland Islands. These islands, a haven for a variety of seabirds, offer a glimpse into a unique ecosystem. The Seafowl rookeries are home to the striking Southern Royal Albatross, with its impressive three-meter wingspan. These majestic birds, along with their close relative, the Gibson’s Albatross, return to these islands every two years to breed. They raise a single chick each year, a testament to their dedicated parenting. The islands’ fellfields, windswept and covered in tussocks, provide the perfect nesting grounds. Adam’s Island, thankfully pest-free, safeguards Gibson’s Albatross eggs from predators. On Enderby Island, a smaller colony of Southern Royal Albatrosses thrives. The Seafowl rookeries are also a refuge for the rare Yellow-Eyed penguin. These small penguins find shelter in the dense rata forest, where they raise their chicks over a period of up to 120 days. The Auckland Islands are also crucial for the New Zealand Sea Lion, listed as Nationally Critical. Sandy Bay, on Enderby Island, bustles with activity during breeding season. Here, large male sea lions, weighing up to 400 kg, compete for dominance and harems of females. Mothers protect their young pups, often moving them into the rata forest when they are around six weeks old to shield them from the boisterous males. The rocky coasts of the Seafowl rookeries teem with Southern Rockhopper penguins, while Giant Petrels and Skua gulls patrol the skies and shores. The Seafowl rookeries are a testament to the rich biodiversity of the Auckland Islands, a sanctuary for rare and threatened species.
