Pulled a muscle at a seafood disco? That’s the joke that sparked this incredible artwork. Welcome to the Seafood Disco Sculpture, a creation by Studio Morison.
This isn’t your average sculpture. The Seafood Disco is a 27-meter-long picnic bench. It can seat 60 people. It’s London’s biggest picnic table. The bench curves gently. Studio Morison designed it to resemble a smile.
The idea for the Seafood Disco started simply. It began with a bag of coconuts. This led to the funfair motif of half coconuts. They prop up stools and peek through the tabletops.
Look closely at the surface of the Seafood Disco Sculpture. You’ll see pearlescent shells. These shells are set within the unique terrazzo. This detail connects the sculpture to the nearby River Thames. It also enhances its joyful smile.
MASS Concrete helped create the unique concrete finishes. Recycled glass is set within the terrazzo surface too.
But the Seafood Disco is more than just a pretty bench. It is a public space for everyone. It also features four barbecues. These barbecues encourage people to gather. People cook and eat together. All this happens while enjoying the river views. You can see the Emirates Air Line cable car and the Thames Barrier.
