Across the street, you can almost hear the echoes of theological debates. Seabury-Western Theological Seminary once stood here, a pillar of the Episcopal Church. Established in 1933, Seabury-Western wasn’t always a single entity. It was the product of a merger between the Western Theological Seminary of Chicago and the Seabury Divinity School of Faribault, Minnesota. This union sought to bridge the “High Church” and “Low Church” traditions, resulting in a unique theological tapestry. For much of its existence, Seabury-Western mirrored the ethos of the General Theological Seminary in New York. It embraced Anglo-Catholic liturgical practices while remaining open to modern theological thought. Imagine the halls alive with discussions, the air thick with the pursuit of knowledge and faith. However, the seminary ceased residential operations in 2010 after Northwestern University acquired the property. The spirit of Seabury-Western lives on, though, having federated with Bexley Hall Seminary in Ohio to become Bexley Seabury. While the physical presence is gone, the legacy of theological inquiry continues to resonate.
