“This place has seen some changes,” an old man muttered, leaning on his cane. Scott Park has always been a heart of this community, even before it officially became a park. Back then, it was just a piece of land, part of a larger property owned by a woman named Mary Armstrong. She lived here for years, tending her garden in the shadow of the two chimneys that still stand today. They’re all that’s left of her home, a silent reminder of the past. The county purchased the land in 2003, after Ms. Armstrong passed away. They named it Mary Scott Nature Park, honoring both her and a close friend. You can still see hints of her life here, in the terraced land that might have been farmed and the remnants of stone walls from her garden. Today, Scott Park is a haven for nature lovers and those seeking a bit of peace in the city. It’s a Certified Wildlife Sanctuary, recognized for its efforts to support birds and other creatures. Walk the trails and you might spot some of the native plants Ms. Armstrong cultivated, like the Pagoda Dogwood. Keep an eye out for bursts of color from trillium, bloodroot, and wild ginger. As you listen to the birdsong and the rustle of leaves, remember the woman who called this place home. Imagine her working in her garden, the scent of flowers filling the air. Her legacy lives on in the quiet beauty of Scott Park.
