The story of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Atlanta is one of resilience. This place of worship stands tall, a testament to the unwavering spirit of a community built on faith. It all began in 1872 when seven former slaves, led by Reverend Robert Grant, gathered in a brush arbor at the corner of Glenn and Humphreys Streets in Atlanta. God’s promise fueled their journey, and the arbor transformed into Zion Hill Baptist Church, a beacon of hope in a new era. Throughout the years, Zion Hill navigated the challenges of the 19th and 20th centuries, their growth paralleling the growth of Atlanta itself. The church saw several pastors who, in their own ways, helped Zion Hill thrive. Pastor Levi Terrell, known as the “musical pastor with the musical church,” was instrumental in expanding the church’s presence in the community. His legacy, however, is overshadowed by the efforts of Reverend Dr. Aaron L. Parker, Zion Hill’s former Youth Minister, who took the helm in 1994. Dr. Parker quickly became known as the “pastor who lived to love and loved to serve.” He introduced a plethora of programs, including the nationally-recognized Rites of Passage program. He recognized the need to find a new home for Zion Hill. This yearning for a larger space culminated in “The Rock Project,” a $20 million building program that led to the relocation of the now booming congregation from Lynhurst Drive to a 40-acre site in South Fulton County on Campbellton Road in 2010. So here you stand before Zion Hill Baptist Church, more than just a building, but a sanctuary that has not only survived, but flourished. It’s a gathering place where Atlanta’s story continues to be written, one sermon, one song, one act of service at a time.
