Imagine a time when the Weser’s currents were the lifeblood of Bremen. Here before us stands the Schwarzer Leuchtturm. It is a silent sentinel of a bygone era. This beacon once guided ships safely along the Unterweser.

The Schwarzer Leuchtturm Warfleth is more than just steel and iron. It is a story etched in every beam and bolt. Originally constructed in 1897 by Heinrich Tillmann. It was built at the Bremer Vulkan shipyard. Initially, the tower stood in Farge. It served as a Quermarkenfeuer or cross-range light.

Imagine the scene. It is 1898. The gas-powered lantern flickers to life for the first time. It uses a state-of-the-art system by Julius Pintsch. Ships navigating the tricky Weser channel relied on this light. The light used a Fresnel lens of the 6th order.

In 1925 the Schwarzer Leuchtturm was heightened by six meters. Its light now shone from 16.8 meters above. This was essential for the growing ships. In 1954 the tower was relocated to Warfleth. This happened during another round of Weser improvements.

Before the Schwarzer Leuchtturm arrived a simple iron lattice beacon marked the way. It guided ships toward the Lemwerder range. This earlier light was destroyed in 1946. It was rebuilt only to be replaced when the Schwarzer Leuchtturm took over.

Here in Warfleth the Schwarzer Leuchtturm became part of a range of lights. The tower was the Oberfeuer or the upper light. A white tripod beacon stood as the Unterfeuer or lower light. Together they formed a critical guide. The lights helped vessels navigate a safe path. In 1974 the lights were synchronized. They flashed together every eight seconds.

But progress marches on. By 1983 the new Juliusplate-Berne range came online. The Schwarzer Leuchtturm became obsolete. The lights were extinguished. In 1988 the lower light was dismantled. The Schwarzer Leuchtturm faced the same fate.

That is when the citizens stepped in. The Schwarzer Leuchtturm Warfleth e.V. was founded in 1988. This group saved the landmark. They took ownership from the Water and Shipping Authority of Bremen.

Today, the Schwarzer Leuchtturm stands as a testament to maritime history. The Verein or association preserves it. This ensures that the stories of the river and its seafarers are not forgotten. When you visit, remember the hands that built it. Remember the sailors who trusted it. Remember the community that saved it. The Schwarzer Leuchtturm is a beacon of the past.
