What secrets lay hidden beneath the tranquil surface of the Schwartautal und Curauer Moor? This seemingly serene landscape, a tapestry of wetlands and woodlands, holds a history as captivating as it is unexpected. The Schwartautal und Curauer Moor, located northwest of Bad Schwartau, stretches over 270 hectares. A main hiking trail, originating from the villages of Curau and Böbs, winds its way through the heart of this protected area. As you traverse this path, you are greeted by a captivating mosaic of habitats. Lush deciduous forests intermingle with swampy thickets, giving way to vibrant wet meadows. Look closely, for these distinct ecosystems, shaped by the ebb and flow of water, support a fascinating diversity of life. Once, a vast lake graced this very spot. Over time, the lake gradually filled with sediment, transforming into a low-lying moor. The moor, a haven for unique plant life, thrived until the 1950s when the course of the Schwartau River was altered. This intervention led to the draining of the moor, forever changing the landscape and displacing the native flora and fauna. However, hope was not lost. In the year 2000, the Stiftung Naturschutz Schleswig-Holstein, a nature conservation foundation, embarked on a mission to restore this ecological treasure. They began by acquiring parcels of land within the moor, gradually piecing back together this fractured habitat. Today, thanks to their unwavering dedication, the Schwartautal und Curauer Moor is a testament to the power of ecological restoration. The return of its natural water balance has breathed new life into the area.
