How about a trip back in time? Imagine stepping into Schwanewede, a town where history whispers from every corner. Schwanewede is a municipality in Lower Saxony. It sits a comfortable 22 km northwest of Bremen.

Schwanewede’s story stretches back centuries. The first documented mention of Schwanewede was in 1203. However, the villages of Aschwarden and Rade were mentioned even earlier, around 1100.

Let’s talk about names for a moment. “Schwanewede” initially appeared as a personal name. This evolved over time to represent the place we know today.

Did you know Schwanewede once belonged to the Prince-Archbishopric of Bremen? Later, it became the Duchy of Bremen. The Hanoverian Crown ruled it from 1715 until 1823. Then, the Duchy was abolished. Schwanewede became part of the Stade Region.

Schwanewede isn’t just one village. It is an association of twelve smaller villages. These villages include Beckedorf, Löhnhorst, and Neuenkirchen. Each one adds to Schwanewede’s unique character.

Let’s wander through the area a bit. The western part of Schwanewede is marshland. It is mainly grassland along the Weser river. Head east and the landscape changes. You will find higher ground with forests.

Have you heard of Harriersand? It is a large river island in the Weser. This island belongs to Schwanewede since 1974. It is one of the longest river islands in Europe. It even boasts a sandy beach.

Now, a sobering note from the past. During World War II, the Farge concentration camp was located in Schwanewede-Neuenkirchen. It serves as a grim reminder of darker times.

Schwanewede also has a military history. In 1958, the German army set up a base here. The Lütsow-Kaserne was a significant site. However, these units were disbanded during troop reductions. The site was repurposed as a refugee camp in 2015.

Schwanewede’s local government is quite active. The council consists of 34 members. They are elected every five years. Since 2021, Christina Jantz-Herrmann has been the mayor.

The Schwanewede coat of arms features a white swan on a blue background. The flag is blue and white. It proudly displays the municipal crest.

Are you interested in museums? Visit the Beckedorfer Schmiedemuseum. It showcases 19th-century blacksmithing. You can see a fully functional smithy. Also explore Baracke Wilhelmine, which documents the history of a former military site and its connection to the Nazi era.

Schwanewede also boasts several notable churches. The St. Johannes Church is a timber-framed building from 1761. The Michaelskirche in Neuenkirchen has a Romanesque tower dating back to 1192.

Pause for a moment at the Wassermühlen, the watermills in Meyenburg and Neuenkirchen-Göspe. Consider the windmill in Aschwarden, a unique double-storey structure from 1896. These buildings tell stories of past industry.

Don’t miss the Mausoleum near Koppelsberg. It is a neo-Gothic brick building, built around 1860. It served as the burial site for the von der Wisch family.

Before we leave, a final detail. Schwanewede is twinned with communities in other regions. It is part of the Kommunalverbund Niedersachsen/Bremen.

So, as you wander through Schwanewede, remember its long history. From ancient settlements to modern-day life, Schwanewede has a story to tell.
