Can you hear the faint strains of a melody? It lingers in the air around the final resting place of Alfred Longin Schütz. This talented Polish composer and pianist now rests here in Munich. He lived a life filled with music and dramatic turns.

Alfred Schütz was born in 1910 in Tarnopol. His life’s journey led him across Europe and beyond. Schütz’s early years were steeped in music. He studied at the Lwów Conservatory. He showed talent as a pianist. However, his father encouraged him to study law. Schütz pursued law but his heart belonged to music.

During his studies, Alfred Schütz composed for academic theater. He also worked with Polish Radio Lwów. He founded the Złoty Pieprzyk cabaret in 1930. Later, he abandoned law to focus on music.

In 1939, World War II disrupted Alfred Schütz’s thriving career. Fleeing Warsaw after the German invasion, he eventually found himself in Soviet-occupied Lwów. There, he established the Lwów Theatre of Miniatures. Soon the theater was nationalized. Schütz became its accompanist.

His journey took another dramatic turn when he joined the Anders Army in 1941. He led a 40-person orchestra. They accompanied the Polish army. Their journey stretched from Tehran to Monte Cassino. This is where Alfred Schütz created his most famous melody.

The story goes that on the night of May 17, 1944, as battles raged near Monte Cassino. Feliks Konarski wrote the lyrics to “Czerwone Maki na Monte Cassino” which means “Red Poppies on Monte Cassino”. He awakened Schütz. The composer immediately composed the melody. The song became a symbol of Polish courage and sacrifice.

After the war, Alfred Schütz continued his musical journey. He worked in revues in Brazil. He then settled in Munich in 1961. He collaborated with Radio Free Europe for 25 years. Schütz composed songs for radio programs.

Alfred Schütz passed away in Munich. He was buried here at the Ostfriedhof. Schütz’s gravestone is in section 166. It marks the final resting place of a remarkable composer.

Take a moment to reflect on Alfred Schütz’s life. He was a composer. He was a soldier. He was a man who found solace and strength in music amidst turmoil. Remember him for his enduring melody “Czerwone Maki na Monte Cassino”. The song continues to resonate with people around the world.
