Time stood still within the aged stones of the Schottenkapelle. This unassuming chapel whispers tales of centuries past. It’s more than just a building. It’s a living testament to Konstanz’s rich history.

The Schottenkapelle St Jakob stands proudly on the edge of Schottenplatz. It was built in 1589. It replaced older structures of Irish monks. These monks were known as the Scoti. Their original buildings sadly fell into disrepair by the 15th century. The Reformation in Konstanz sealed their fate. The old buildings were demolished. The city council then decided to erect a new chapel. This would serve as a burial chapel for the existing cemetery. This cemetery had been in use since 1541.

For nearly a century from 1784 to 1870 the Schottenkapelle served Konstanz. It was the city’s main cemetery. This changed with a new main cemetery opening across the Rhine. The Schottenfriedhof then closed. The graves were moved. The area was cleared to make way for the Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium and its sports hall.

The Schottenkapelle faced demolition several times. It fell into disrepair due to neglect. The Vincentius-Haus-AG saved it. They purchased the land in the 1970s. They undertook extensive exterior renovations from 1974 to 1980. They then transferred ownership to the Catholic parish of Konstanz. The parish completed the interior renovations.

Today vibrant wall paintings from 1733 adorn its interior. Stained-glass windows by Albert Birkle add a splash of color. A wooden statue of St James created by Brigitta Hemmer in 1994 stands sentinel. The Schottenkapelle continues to serve the community. Monthly youth services are held there. The Evangelical Lutheran Markusgemeinde also holds its Sunday service. The Serbian Orthodox community also uses the chapel for its liturgy.
