A 13-acre campus. That’s the School of the Arts Singapore. SOTA. Impressive isn’t it?
This isn’t just any school. It’s a specialized independent school. A place where young artists from ages 13 to 18 come to hone their skills. SOTA offers a unique six-year integrated arts and academic curriculum. They earn an International Baccalaureate diploma. Or a career-related program. Many pursue further education at prestigious universities afterward.
The School of the Arts Singapore didn’t just appear. It has a fascinating history. The idea was born from recommendations in 2002. They sought to diversify education. A committee was formed in 2003. They studied establishing a specialized arts school. Auditions were held. Over 1000 students attended wanting in. The first class started small in 2008. It was at a temporary location on Goodman Road. Only 200 students.
Then in 2010 SOTA moved to its current permanent home. This amazing 13-acre campus at 1 Zubir Said Drive. The building itself is a work of art. It was a $145 million project. It was designed by the award-winning firm WOHA.
More than just a school SOTA boasts partnerships. They collaborate with places like Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Students can even transfer to complete their programs faster. There’s a collaboration with Louis Vuitton. It supports visual arts programs. And even a partnership with the IB to develop a new literary arts course. SOTA is continually evolving. Always developing its students.
Many notable alumni have already made names for themselves. Like Regina Song. She is a successful Singaporean singer-songwriter. SOTA is a launchpad. A place of opportunity.
